Let’s face it, injuries are an occupational hazard for most athletes – they simply come with the territory. For some people, recovering from any injury is almost seen as a badge of honor, or at least deserving of bragging rights.
Runners, it seems, suffer more than their share of injuries and discomfort. And it’s little wonder, when you look at all the miles and years of pounding we put our bodies through. One study estimates that 20- to 80 percent of runners sustain an overuse (lower extremity) injury in a one-year period, and, according to another study, between five and six running injuries per 1,000 hours of running.
Runners are also pretty resilient and determined folk. Oftentimes they can successfully diagnose themselves (and others). And even if they don’t get things exactly right, a little ice, Advil and rest usually does the trick in a couple of weeks or so.
But when should we see a doctor or specialist for help?
Listen to this podcast (well, sort of podcast) for some insight.
Hi June! Sorry to hear about your Achilles tendonitis. I’m sure you’ll be back to normal in no time, though you’re smart to “test the waters” after some rest. I’m feeling better with each passing day, thank you, though commuting to the city leaves me so tired by the end of the day. Thanks for your comment!
I’m so glad to hear that you’re on the mend, and possibly going about a chunk of your daily routine. I hope you’re not in too much pain. I’m still somewhat benched due to Achille’s tendonitis, but am going to test the waters in the next day or two. I’m a little nervous, but eager to get back. More importantly, I’ll be tuning in for updates of your recovery.
