There are many reasons to be grateful this Thanksgiving weekend.
For starters, my family and I survived Hurricane Sandy (yes, we live in hard-hit New Jersey) relatively unscathed. Even though I lost power for 10 days and my commute to New York was for awhile a two-hour odyssey each way, no one was hurt and our house was still standing. (And unlike Hurricane Irene the year before, our basement did not flood.)
I am grateful, too, that I have been able to run again as a way to relieve the storm-induced stress. And on Thanksgiving day, not only did I volunteer for my town’s 8K fundraising race, but I was actually able to participate in it! This was my first race since my two arthroscopic hip surgeries last year (the first in July, the second in December) to repair two labral tears.
I wasn’t super fast – but I was far from last!
Congradulations! You turned the corner and are on your way. It will be a distant memory soon. I will be 2 years post-op in January 2013. Cant say that I regret it, but boy at 52 was I apprehensive about going through with it. In the end, best thing I did, and I got my quality of life back. Did you happen to see today A-Rod tore his other hip labrum. He’s going to HSS to have it done by Kelly…first one was done by Phillipon. Best wishes, stay healthy, happy holidays and new years.
Hi Armando!
It certainly has been a roller-coaster ride (for both of us), though I feel as though I finally have turned the corner.
Congratulations on your nearly two-year anniversary. You have been a great help, and inspiration, to me! And for that I thank you!
Yes, I was aware of A-Rod’s continuing hip travails and actually was planning to do a post on it.
Happy Holidays to you, too! Stay in touch.

Hi Vivian, My knee scope went good. I had a small lateral meniscus tear and had to have a lateral release as patella was not tracking right and was tilted and some cartilage debrided behind kneecap and something removed behind the knee. One small area on knee is down to bone on bone. I am now today feeling much better. I am doing some home exercises right now and then have a appt on Monday for physical therapy. The dr did talk to me after surgery and he did say I can run. I was worried he would tell me that my knee was too bad to run. He did tell me that my knee will feel better but will not be normal.
Did you ever notice after your surgery on your hip that if you were on your feet for a long time that your hip would hurt. I am looking forward to next year to doing all the sport activities that I like. Hopefully no more surgeries.
I’m happy everything went well with the knee scope, Debbie. And, yes, hopefully no more surgeries!
My left side, which was scoped first, occasionally hurts at random times (usually when it’s about to rain or when I haven’t stretched enough afterwards). But nothing at all like it did before it was scoped, so I’ve just learned to live with it.
Hi Debbie,
Good luck with your knee scope!
Stay in touch,
Vivian
Hi!!! I am glad you did not have a lot of damage from Hurricane Sandy. I live on the West Coast and saw alot of the devastation on TV. My heart goes out to everyone who went through this. That is great you volunteered and ran in your 8-K. You finished it and that what matters. My running has gotten put back on hold for know. Actually this morning I am having arthoscopic knee surgery. This is on the same side as my last hip surgery. So know it will be more rehab and then hopefully will get to run some. Even if it is no more than a 5-k. But would like to try to run/walk a half marathon. Keep up the great posts.
