I moved up the date of my second arthroscopic hip surgery (This time on my right side!) to Friday, Dec. 9, from Friday, Jan. 13. It’s not because I’m particularly superstitious. (I’m not, really.) The surgeon’s office just had an earlier opening, and I wanted to get it over and done with before the holidays. This way, too, I’ll have the entire winter and early spring to rehab. Again.
In three weeks I have my preop appointment, which is just a general checkup to ensure that I’m fit to have the surgery.
In the meantime, I will focus on staying as physically fit as I can — which means continued physical therapy on both legs, trips to the gym for weight-lifting and aerobic workouts on the elliptical machine and stationary bike, spin classes, and, yes, even a little bit of running.
Hi Vivian,
I’ve really been enjoying reading your blog. Now that I’m almost 2 weeks post surgery for my second shoulder (and it’s been a breeze this time, thank God) I’m almost ready to face that labral tear. When you get a chance, will you give me your Dr.’s name and number?
Thanks! And good luck on the 9th!! Bring it on!
Tricia
Hi Tricia,
Thanks for checking out my blog. So glad BOTH shoulders are doing better. Seems the second time is charm!
A runner friend recently had his second hip impingement surgery and he said that the recovery was so much faster than the first time.
My doctor is Struan Coleman from HSS. (He also worked on my friend.) Dr. Coleman is reachable at 212.606.1095.

I’m 6-7 weeks out from having surgery for a torn labrum and some bone impingements..today is the first day I’m crutch free. I’m so excited that I can ride the bike next week, even if it’s just for a few minutes – somehow when researching bike rehab I stumbled across your blog. Anyway, just trying to hang in there and get back to running, weight-lifting and kickboxing (I hope!) My dr hasn’t prescribed pt yet, thinks it causes too much inflamation but I miss having someone keep me grounded – like can I dance this weekend? Can I wear heels? – so hopefully the dr’s plan works! He joked that I was killing him with all the crazy questions when I saw him a few weeks ago – but if you don’t tell me specifically what I can’t do then if I don’t hear it means I can do it and like 5 times, up a hill…LOL. In the meantime I’m grounded and walking up and down stairs like a toddler but at least I’m crutch free. Thanks for your blog! I’m sure it will help me and keep me sane while I slowly rehab. I’m sorry you have to do this again! yikes!
Hi Janice,
Thanks so much for reading my blog, and for your comments. Sounds like you are making steady progress in your recovery. At more than four months I am feeling (almost) back to normal with my left hip. While I certainly don’t relish the thought of doing this again, on the right side, I am glad to have had a quick diagnosis and the chance to get it fixed quickly and move on.
Good luck to you, and keep me posted on how you’re doing.
