Surgery Countdown

As of today, I have exactly one month to go before arthroscopic surgery to repair the torn labrum on my left hip.

And am I ready already!

Not only am I dealing with the constant pain associated with the tear — it’s generally dull, though intensifies when sitting too long or after the occasional run — but I’m also experiencing increasing levels of muscle discomfort on the “good side,” because of overcompensation. This is especially noticeable after what I consider a good workout. Prescription-strength Naproxen helps assuage the soreness, but only surgery will ultimately correct these problems.

So as the serious countdown begins, I tackle my first task: buying a good upright stationary bike.

My doctor wants me to start using it the day after surgery (yes you read that right!), to help prevent stiffness that could ultimately inhibit my range in motion, and to reduce swelling, pain and scar tissue. Actually, I have a choice between buying a bike or renting a CPM machine (short for continuous passive motion). The CPM moves the joint without the use of your muscles, while the bike could essentially do the same, provided that all the resistance is off.

Here’s one example of a CPM:

And another:

I’m actually thinking about getting both bike and machine: the CPM for the early part of my rehabilitation and the bike as I move further along in my recovery. Plus I get to keep the bike long after I’m all fixed up!

I’ll keep you posted.

Welcome

Most athletes have experienced a “second wind,” that jolt of energy and strength that allows us, enervated and dispirited, to carry on. But sometimes our bodies cannot recover on their own – we need outside help so we can catch our “third wind.”
