Sans Stitches and Crutches

Day 12 in my recovery from arthroscopic hip surgery marked a small milestone.

The stitches came out. Four Steri-Strips were put in their place; they will eventually fall off on their own, I am told. (And then I am free to swim.)

These are what Steri-Strips look like, if you didn’t already know:

I was also told that I could ditch the crutches, which means that I am free to drive. (I still use one crutch occasionally when I’m feeling a little wobbly.)

The surgeon’s office showed me pictures of my surgery (which I hope to eventually post); gave me a note for my employer; a prescription for physical therapy (16 weeks, two to three times a week), which I will begin in two days; and orders to come back in six weeks.

I celebrated this very positive checkup with a 10-minute spin on the stationary bike. Weeee!

Welcome

Most athletes have experienced a “second wind,” that jolt of energy and strength that allows us, enervated and dispirited, to carry on. But sometimes our bodies cannot recover on their own – we need outside help so we can catch our “third wind.”
